ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – After an intense bought of rain in recent weeks, a different kind of issue has cropped up in Albuquerque: trash building up in drainage ditches.
With rain comes run-off, but not the type you may traditionally think of. All across the city, there is trash in drainage ditches.

The drainage ditch by I-40 and Galbadon is no stranger to the issue. It’s right up against a bike path many use on the weekends. Because of recent rain, the path has become something unsightly.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation maintains dozens of ditches around the Metro and also covers part of clean up on state highways. However, rain and littering lead to buildup.
Crews are working around the clock to keep up with the trash and other maintenance needs, but they are asking the public to help do their part to help prevent things like this.
Above all, officials have a simple message for the public: do not litter.
