ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – We’re hearing for the first time from one of the suspects accused in the murder of an 11-year-old outside Isotopes Park last year, it’s a crime that shocked Albuquerque because it was a case of mistaken identity. One suspect told police how the accused shooter Nathen Garley reacted after the shooting.
Daniel Gomez is one of three men accused of shooting and killing Froylan Villegas leaving an Isotopes game in September 2023. Gomez told detectives he feared for his life and described how the suspected shooter showed no remorse and even laughed.
Gomez: “To him, nothing happened.”
Newly released lapel video paints a picture of what happened after a devastating shooting outside Isotopes Park last year, where 11-year-old Froylan Villegas was killed and his cousin was left paralyzed.
Officer: “Who shot?”
Gomez: “Blik.”
Officer: “Did Risk shoot at all?”
Gomez: “Nope. Not once.”
In an interview two weeks after the shooting one of the suspects, now 27-year-old Gomez, explains his reaction.
Gomez: “Me and Risk we were sitting there like teary-eyed you know scared.”
Gomez also broke down what he saidwas concerning behavior from the third suspect in the car, Nathen Garley.
Gomez: “It’s like, it’s like he had done it before. You know it was like he was already used to it. To him it was nothing but a little adrenaline rush.”
Garley is suspected to have shot at the Villegas’ truck believing rival gang members were inside. Gomez says Garley bragged about the shooting saying, “I know I hit all of them in that truck I was aiming right for that b****.”
Gomez told detectives that’s when he first remembers feeling afraid for his own life.
Gomez: “That’s where my fear jumped from 20 to 100 in a heartbeat because I was like yo this f***** don’t care, like if I say something wrong to this f***** right now I could be next.”
He added he wasn’t sure he could fully explain his fear.
Gomez: “I just did not want to be a victim you know I did not want to be a victim.”
Gomez also told detectives he received calls warning him not to say anything saying the caller told him he knows where he lives.
Gomez is out of custody while Jose Romero and Garley remain behind bars. No trial date has been set but there is a status conference set for September. Garley is also facing federal drug charges.
